The Best Plumbing Hacks

Top 10 Plumbing Hacks (To Save You Money)

There are definitely situations in which you need a plumber, especially if you have limited or no plumbing experience. While you may not want to attempt repiping, bathtub installation, or fixing a slab leak, there are plenty of DIY plumbing repairs you can handle on your own with a little know-how. Here are ten of the best plumbing hacks to try at home so you can avoid a call for plumbing service and save yourself a bundle.

#1. Declog a Toilet Without a Plumber

Difficulty: Easy

A service call from a plumber to fix a clogged toilet can be expensive. If you find your toilet clogged and you don’t have a plunger handy (or worse — you’re at a friend’s house!), you may be able to break down the clog with hot water as long as the clog is organic or toilet paper. Try this quick plumbing hack to avoid ruining the party!

Instructions

Stop the flow of water. With a simple clog, you can just remove the cover on the tank and disconnect the chain to keep the valve closed. You can also turn off the water at the valve at the back of the toilet.

Fill a cup with hot water. The hotter the water, the faster this works.

Pour the hot water into the toilet. The heat will help break down the clog.

If hot water doesn’t help, try adding a bit of soap to break down the clog.

#2. Fix Leaking Pipes Under the Sink

Difficulty: Moderate

Notice plumbing pipes leaking under your sink at the connection? Before you call a plumber, try this cheap and easy hack using plumber’s tape, a bucket, and a wrench.

Instructions

Turn off the water supplying the pipes. If you don’t know where the local turn-off valve is, you can use the home’s main turn-off valve.

With a monkey wrench, loosen the pipes at the threads and disconnect them. Make sure you have a bucket under the connection as there will be water left in the pipes.

Place plumber’s tape around the threads, running it in a clockwise direction.

Reconnect the pipes. The tape will help achieve a tighter grip without replacing the pipes.

#3. Repair a Leaking Faucet

Difficulty: Moderate

A leaking faucet is a common but annoying plumbing problem that happens with the inner components of the faucet wear out. Here’s how to replace worn washers, seals, and O-rings.

Instructions

For a compression faucet: Remove the decorative cap on the faucet handle, remove the handle screw, and pull off the handle. Use a crescent wrench to remove the packing nut. Once you unscrew the stem, remove and replace the seat washer that’s held in place with a screw. Next, remove the stem from the packing nut and replace the O-ring that’s causing the leak.

For a ball-type faucet: With this type of faucet, a replacement kit with all-new parts is the best option. Remove the handle set screw and take off the handle. Use pliers to remove the cap and collar then a special tool in the kit to loosen the faucet cam. Remove the faucet cam, the cam washer, and the rotating ball. Use needle-nose pliers to remove the inlet seals and springs from the faucet body. Cut off the O-rings and coat the new ones in plumbing grease before rolling them on. Install the new springs, valve seats, and cam washers while reassembling the faucet.

#4. Unclog a Sink Drain

Difficulty: Easy

Clogged sink drains are very common but easy to fix in most cases. Here’s a quick DIY plumbing fix that can get your drain flowing freely again without harmful chemicals.

Instructions

Carefully pour baking soda down the clogged drain then immediately pour vinegar after it. Cover the drain right away. The chemical reaction between the vinegar and baking soda helps loosen debris and food trapped in the drain to wash it away.

After several minutes, remove the drain cover and pour hot water down the plumbing drain.

#5. Fix Low Water Pressure in the Shower

Difficulty: Easy

Plagued by low water pressure from your showerhead? The problem’s likely caused by an accumulation of scale, not a wide scale plumbing problem. The good news is the fix is easy.

Instructions

Make sure the water is off then unscrew the showerhead.

Remove the spray plate and soak in a descaling solution like white vinegar for a few hours. Reattach the plate.

#6. Get Rid of Rust-Coloured or Smelly Water

Difficulty: Mildly challenging

Is your hot water smelly or discoloured? The problem is likely an accumulation of minerals in the water heater and/or a degraded anode rod, not a major plumbing problem. Here’s what to do.

Instructions

Start by turning off the power to your water heater.

Drain your water heater to remove the water and mineral deposits. Attach a garden hose to the valve at the bottom of the water heater and turn the valve to release the water. Drain the water outside if possible.

Look for the hexagonal head of the anode rod at the top of the water heater. Use an air compressor, 1-1/16-inch socket, and 1/2-inch drive impact wrench to loosen the rod, then remove the rest by hand. If it’s stuck in place, use WD-40 to lubricate it first.

To replace the anode rod, be sure you rub Teflon pipe thread sealant on the threads first for a good seal.

#7. Save Money and Water

Difficulty: Easy

An easy plumbing hack to save yourself money with every flush is taking up more space in your toilet tank. Try this hack to save water and reduce your water bill.

Instructions

Add a full 20-ounce water bottle to the corner of your toilet tank. Every time you flush, the displacement means less water will be used. Just make sure the bottle stays at the bottom and doesn’t float freely so it won’t interfere with the flushing mechanism.

#8. Clear a Jammed Garbage Disposal

Difficulty: Easy

A clogged or jammed garbage disposal may seem like a great reason to call a plumber, but the truth is fixing this problem requires no real plumbing knowledge. You’ll know you have a jammed disposal when it hums but doesn’t grind or starts and stops before you turn it off.

Instructions

Unplug your garbage disposal.

Look for the hex-shaped hole on the bottom of the garbage disposal. Use a 1/4-inch hex wrench and force it back and forth in both directions a few times. This will free the impellers of the disposal.

If there is no hex hole, use a short broom stick and put it into the disposal from the top, forcing it against one of the blades and using it to push the impeller back and forth.

#9. Deodorize Your Garbage Disposal

Difficulty: Easy

Do you notice an unpleasant aroma around your kitchen sink? It’s likely caused by rotting debris and food in the pipes and disposal. You don’t need to call a plumber; deodorizing a garbage disposal and kitchen drain takes no plumbing knowledge.

Instructions

Put ice cubes down the disposal plus a small amount of lemon peel.

Run the disposal for about 30 seconds and add a small amount of dish detergent while it’s running. This will harden the debris and make it easier to remove from the blades while the lemon peel naturally deodorizes.

#10. Remove an Item From the Toilet

Difficulty: Easy

We’ve all been there: you accidentally dropped a ring or small object down the sink drain or into the toilet. The good news is you don’t need to call a plumber or dismantle your plumbing to retrieve it.

Instructions

Remove the filter from a wet/dry vacuum. Add a crevice attachment to the hose if you are trying to suck up jewelry.

Direct the hose into the toilet, going as far into the drain as you can before turning the vacuum on.

You will likely feel or hear when the item is sucked up.

Conclusion

So there you have the best 10 domestic plumbing hacks to save you money. Remember if you plumbing job is out of your capability then don’t hesitater to call a licensed plumber to help you. Somtimes DIY PLumbing can lkead to more serious problem sif the job isn’t done correctly.

Hot Water Heater Guide

Buying Guide to Hot Water Systems

Having to take a dishearteningly cold or tepid shower is just one of the factors that can have you thinking of a new water heater. Alternatively, your water heater might be past its life expectancy, or you want to reduce your energy bills. If you are looking to install a water heater, you’re in luck. Aside from the improved and more energy efficient technologies, there is a range of options when it comes to fuel type and capacity.

What is a hot water system?

Also known as a water heater, a hot water system is an appliance that provides a constant supply of hot water. A variety of hot water heaters is currently available. In general, classification depends on their energy source and whether they store hot water or not.

When choosing a water heater, the system’s energy source or method of heating is what you’ll need to consider first. To help you understand which heating method best suits your budget and needs, here’s a detailed look at electric, gas, solar, and heat pump hot water systems.

Electric hot water systems

Electric hot water systems come in both the storage tank and continuous flow options. This type heats water using one or two replaceable electric-resistance heating elements. Depending on the size of insulated tank featured, traditional electric water heaters can hold 20-80 gallons of hot water. When hot water is needed, cold water enters the tank and is heated to a predetermined temperature. As a result, the storage tank is always filled with hot water. Insulating the tanks reduces stand-by heat loss.

Compared to storage tank water heaters, continuous flow electric units are more efficient because they heat water for immediate use. Unlike the storage tank option, this method does not result in any standby heat loss.

While it’s relatively cheap to purchase and install, an electric storage tank hot water system is often the most expensive to run, particularly if it operates at a constant rate (full-day). Fortunately, some systems run on off-peak electricity. Although this type consumes less energy than its counterpart, it needs a larger tank to ensure the water heated overnight lasts all day. Unfortunately, off-peak electricity is not available to every home.

On average, a household of four will require a 125–160L tank for the continuous power system and a 250–315L tank for the off-peak electricity unit.

Pros

Electric water heaters can be installed both indoors and outdoors

A variety of high-efficiency options is available

Safer than both propane and natural gas water heaters

Easy to install

Relatively affordable initial cost

Provides a constant supply of hot water regardless of weather

Different capacities, from 20 to 80 gallons

Cons

Low-quality units and faulty installations increase the risk of electrocution since electricity and water do not mix well

Over time, the cost of energy consumed will amount to sizable proportions

Because they contribute to air pollution and the emission of greenhouse gases, electric water heaters are not eco-friendly

Price range

Without the cost of installation, electric water heaters cost $300-$1500.

Gas hot water systems

Today, the gas hot water system is the most commonly used water-heating unit in residential settings, mostly because it is reliable, safe, and inexpensive. Gas water heaters come in both the storage tank and continuous flow options and are powered by propane or natural gas. Because of venting requirements, gas water heaters are usually installed outdoors. However, the inclusion of a flue allows for indoor installation.

Aside from holding 30-100 gallons of water, most units have a pilot light that consumes a small amount of gas. Because it’s cheaper than electricity, natural gas makes an excellent option for those with the necessary connection. Gas water heaters recover much faster than electric water heaters. As such, your supply of hot water will be replenished more rapidly in case of heavy hot water usage. Although propane costs more than natural gas, it’s still significantly cheaper than electricity. In fact, gas water heaters cost about 1/3 the cost of electric water heaters and produce less

On average, a household of four will need a tank of 135–170L for a storage tank unit.

Pros

Considerably low initial cost

Continual supply of hot water inspite of unfavorable weather conditions or power outage issues

Easy to install

Cheaper to run than electric water heaters

Available in a variety of high-efficiency options

Thanks to the rapid recovery rate, you can meet all your hot water requirements with an on-demand gas water heater

Produce less greenhouse gases

Energy efficiency star rating

Cons

Release carbon dioxide gas

Possible risk of gas explosions and carbon monoxide suffocation

Bulky in size, necessitating more installation space

Requires a constant supply of propane in the absence of natural gas

Price range

Minus the cost of installation, gas hot water systems cost $900-$2000.

Solar hot water systems

Although the solar water heater has been around for a while, it’s only until recently that it started gaining popularity, mainly due to environmental concerns and the rising prices of gas and electricity. By relying on solar energy instead of gas or electricity, solar hot water systems provide a practical solution to the rising costs of heating water.

Typically, a solar water heater comprises of solar energy collectors in the form of PV or thermal cells and a storage tank. A roof-mounted cell absorbs the sun’s heat. Solar hot water heaters come in two different types of heating systems.

The passive system does not include any additional moving parts. It is basically a dark colored water tank that applies the convection principle to heat water. Quality units can deliver stellar savings during summer, making them ideal for warm, sunny regions. Most models include a supplemental heat source designed to kick in when needed. Although this feature allows solar water heaters to keep up with demands, they still won’t perform as well on cold and cloudy days.

The active system features circulating pumps and thermostat controls that keep water from flowing whenever the outside temperature is very low. Instead of heating water directly, tubes running inside the collector circulate an antifreeze solution. Heat absorbed from the sun warms the antifreeze. Once heated, the hot solution moves through a series of coils located inside the hot water storage tank. An indirect system is better suited for cold areas.

Pros

Eco-friendly because of zero greenhouse gas emissions

The lack of moving parts makes solar water heaters durable

Uses free solar energy, which helps you save on energy bills

Efficient enough to turn approximately 80 percent radiation into heat energy

Requires minimal maintenance

Cons

Requires a backup heat source

High upfront cost for the equipment and installation

Needs additional space

Can emit a lot of heat, meaning the location has to be planned accordingly

Price range

Solar water heating systems cost $6,300-$7,800 and have an average rebate of about $3,300. Besides, you might receive a 30 percent federal tax credit.

Heat pump or hybrid

The heat pump is a much more efficient version of the electric storage tank water heater. Same as air conditioners and fridges, heat pumps work by transferring heat from one location to another. It uses energy extracted from the air to heat water.

Although units usually feature an integrated tank and compressor, some models have the tank and compressor as separate features. While some can be installed indoors, most models need a well-ventilated installation area with unobstructed space for optimal performance. However, you shouldn’t install a heat pump too close to neighboring houses because the compressor is sometimes as noisy as an air conditioner’s outdoor unit.

Though heat pumps tend to provide optimal performance in warm and temperate regions, some models are designed to perform well in cold climates. Most have a booster element for cold or high demand days, and a capacity of 50-80 gallons.

Because they use air that’s already warm heat pumps are extremely energy efficient, about three times more than traditional storage tank water heaters. Energy Star rated heat pumps can save an average household as much as $300 every year in energy costs. Although the initial cost is higher that most of the other water heating systems, government rebates and several other incentives can help reduce the amount required.

On average, a household of four will need a 270–315L tank.

Pros

Heats water using energy from the air

Extremely energy efficient, meaning much lower utility bills

Relatively expensive upfront

Available as an integrated water tank or an add-on to the existing tank

Easy to maintain

Cons

Needs a lot of unobstructed installation space

Performs only in areas where the yearly temperature stays between 40 and 90 degrees

Can be noisy

Requires drainage since it produces condensate that needs to be drained or pumped outside

Price range

Minus the cost of installation, heat pumps are available at $2500-$4000.

Storage Tanks or Continuous Flow

In terms of hot water storage, there are two types of water heating systems. As the name suggests, storage tank water heaters feature an insulated tank for storing hot water until it’s needed. On the other hand, continuous flow water heating systems, also known as on-demand or instant water heaters, employ heating coils to heat water for immediate use. To help you understand the differences between these two as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each, here is an in-depth look at both.

Storage tank hot water heaters

With a capacity of 20-100 gallons, storage tank water heaters are the most commonly used type. They consist of an insulated tank used to store hot water for later use. When needed, the water emerges from a pipe located in the upper part of the water heater. Furthermore, these units feature two relief valves that open when the temperature or pressure exceeds a preset level. Storage tank water heaters are available in liquid propane (LP), natural gas, solar, heat pump, and electric models.

Storage tank hot water heaters are classified according to the amount of water held in gallons. Overall capacity is an important consideration when choosing a storage tank water heater. If you intend to use this type, make sure you find the right size for your needs. Recovery rate, which means the amount of water a unit heats in an hour, is another important consideration when choosing a storage tank water heater. The more the demand for hot water, the higher the recovery rate needed.

Although the tanks are insulated, some heat loss will occur over time. As such, it is good to install this type of water heater in an insulated space or sunny spot. Because mild steel tanks can corrode over time, they usually have 5 to 10-year warranties. However, proper maintenance helps to prevent corrosion.

Stainless steel tanks are usually more expensive, can last much longer and do not require as much maintenance as their mild-steel counterparts. Although most stainless steel tanks carry a 10-year warranty, they still need occasional maintenance such as valve and seal replacements.

You should check with your installer about the best type for you since the local water quality might have an effect.

Pros

Requires minimal maintenance

Least expensive initial cost

Immediate hot water

Cons

Might not provide a constant supply of hot water, of course depending on the model’s capacity, energy source, and hot water demand.

Not energy efficient because stored water needs continually reheating to maintain the set temperature.

Continuous flow hot water heaters

Also known as tankless, on-demand, or instantaneous water heaters, continuous flow water heating systems do not store hot water. They have no storage capacity. Instead, when you turn on the dishwasher or a hot water faucet, cold water flows into the unit where a series of coils heat it to a preset temperature. The hot water is then piped wherever needed.

Since this type of water heater only heats water for immediate use, it is usually more energy-efficient than the traditional storage tank water heater. Continuous flow water heaters are available in liquid propane (LP), natural gas, and electric models that come in various sizes. These units provide a limited hot water flow rate with most offering 3.5 gallons of hot water per minute.

Pros

Continuous supply hot water

Energy efficient

Requires the least possible installation space

Easily adjustable temperature

Available for both external and internal installations

Reliable and able to provide satisfactory amounts of hot water for any number of users

Eliminates the possibility of rust accumulation, which usually occurs in storage tanks

Cons

Produces greenhouse gas emissions during generation for electric units and during combustion for gas units

Limited water flow rates

Lower achievable flow rates in colder areas

Some electric units need heavy duty wiring, and others cannot use off-peak electricity

Gas units feature a pilot light that can be extinguished by the wind, which is why electronic ignition is recommended

Gas units have flue emissions

What to consider when choosing size

When it comes to water heating systems, capacity often impacts pricing. A family of four might do a load of laundry, take several showers, and run the dishwasher on an average day, consuming 100 or more gallons of hot water in total. However, this does not mean the family needs a 100-gallon storage tank. You should consider the first-hour rating (FHR) and gallons-per-minute rating (GPM) for storage tank water heaters and continuous flow water heaters respectively. The FHR ratings show how much hot water storage tank units can deliver over a given period. Although they do not store hot water, GPM ratings show how much hot water on-demand water heaters can produce in a specified period.

Depending on your hot water demand, professional plumbers can help you calculate the most appropriate capacity for you. A continuous flow water heater might not be the most suitable choice if you draw from multiple sources simultaneously. However, you can install two or more units if drawing from multiple sources at once is a regular occurrence.

The installation of a water heating system

Providing a reasonable estimate without seeing the installation site first is not easy. The cost will depend on the method of installation, which is often unique to every individual project. The mode of installation usually depends on the type of water heater currently installed, the type of unit to be installed, and what needs changing to bring the setup up to the current code.

Getting a qualified and licensed plumber to install your water heater is therefore important. Only professional plumbers can install the unit correctly and to the present local plumbing code. The cases of gas explosions, carbon monoxide suffocation, and electrocution are clear signs that both the installation process and improperly installed water heaters are dangerous. As such, every safety feature needs to be in place.

Adequate plumbing, enough clearance, and proper ventilation are other reasons why hiring a professional, licensed, and experienced plumber is of uttermost importance when installing a water heater.

Furthermore, you shouldn’t assume that the new water heating system will fit where the old one was. Newer models can be wider or taller than older models due to increased insulation and several other efficiency improvements.

Hot water heater maintenance

If you have a storage tank water heater, draining it is one of the most important parts of regular maintenance. By flushing out the minerals and debris that can have an impact on your water heater’s functionality, draining helps to ensure the unit’s longevity. If you do not perform proper maintenance, you may experience bursts of cold water when least expected, or your unit might cease to function altogether. Although professional recommendations vary, it’s best to have your unit drained once every year. However, you may have to drain it more frequently depending on how hard the water in your area is. Aside from checking your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s guidelines, you should consider the services of a professional plumbing contractor.

If you have a continuous flow water heater, you need to ensure the heat exchange elements stay free of scale buildup. Even a light coating might severely impact your unit’s efficiency. If left unchecked, scale buildup causes longer burner cycles, which can strain your unit and lead to a shorter lifespan. Considering the importance of proper maintenance, having your unit professionally maintained is the best course of action.

Energy Star Ratings Explained

Water heating systems have EnergyGuide labels detailing the unit’s expected energy efficiency and yearly operation costs. The energy star rating is a voluntary, trusted, and government-backed rating scheme. Hot water heaters are scored by an Energy Factor (EF) rating, which is the amount of energy a unit converts into hot water. Water heaters must have an Energy Factor of 0.82 or more to qualify for Energy Star ratings. The higher the EF (Energy Factor), the more efficient the model is.

The EnergyGuide label applies a star rating system, in which the stars represent the unit’s energy efficiency. The more the stars, the more efficienct the product is. A unit’s EnergyGuide label provides a quick assessment of the amount of energy that particular model consumes compared to other products in its category. On the other hand, the energy consumption figure is an estimate showing the average amount of energy that unit is expected to use within a year. Unlike the energy stars, the lower the figure, the lower your energy consumption might be.

When choosing a hot water heater, make sure you check its energy efficiency and annual operating costs, both cited on the EnergyGuide label.

Now that you understand the differences between every type and the advantages offered by each, you can determine what is best.
A List of 101 Plumbing Jokes, Quotes And Puns

Plumbers have existed in some form since the earliest civilization began.

The art and science of plumbing really begins with great feats like harnessing the energy created by the Nile river in ancient Egypt, the builders of aqueducts throughout pagan Rome, the incredible floating city of Venice, or more modern plumbing systems used to remove waste from European castles throughout the Middle Ages. The evolution of toilets and plumbing has been a long standing profession, one of the oldest indeed. Human beings do not just need to recognize plumbers for who they are, but acknowledge just how much we truly depend on them in daily life.
The plumber, the plumbing, and all things being fixed, installed, or renovated, this is the work of great men and women. Which is the reason why our world had devoted such a wealth of humor to their challenges and tales from the workplace to their households. Plumbers of all ages and creeds shall forever be the stuff of legends, not because of the wars they have fought in, rather because of the bowls they have plumbed free so bravely.

So here is a salute to plumbers everywhere, with 101 jokes and jests at their expense.

The Top 101 Plumbing Jokes

Why not start our list of plumbing jokes with some quotes from the professionals out there. These are classic plumbing joke quotes, that always remind us everyone knows a plumber or has called on one.

1. “Television is like the invention of indoor plumbing. It didn’t change people’s habits. It just kept them inside the house.” – Alfred Hitchcock
2. “I told my wife the truth. I told her I was seeing a psychiatrist. Then she told me the truth: that she was seeing a psychiatrist, two plumbers, and a bartender.” – Rodney Dangerfield
3 .“Not only is there no God, but try finding a plumber on Sunday.” – Woody Allen
4. “Anybody who has any doubt about the ingenuity or the resourcefulness of a plumber never got a bill from one.” – George Meany
5. “A plumber is the only profession where you get to take a leak and fix it at the same time.” – Joyce Hart

This next one is technically one joke, but it has been suggested that since there are at least three possible answers, then it qualifies as more than one piece of plumbing humor. Therefore, we give you the following classical plumbing tryptic for your approvals.

How many plumbers does it take to screw in a light bulb? (We have 3 possible answers to this plumber joke.)
6. A boss to tell the plumber, a plumber to tell the helper, and a helper to get the electrician to do it.
7. A plumber to get the beer and a plumber to call the electrician. Or the simplest answer…
8. 1 Just call an electrician, plumbers don’t screw around with light bulbs.

Actually that one probably counts as ten jokes or jests in one. You will be left to decide for yourselves as to the number of times laughter escaped your wind pipes. “That was my husband,” she said, putting down the phone. “He’s on his way home, but is going back to the office around 8 p.m.. Come back then, dear, and we can take up where we left off.”
The plumber arrives, and glances over the sink, looking preoccupied. He mumbles something about golf, then hands the doctor a couple of aspirin and walks out, saying, “Put these in. If it doesn’t clear up in 24 hours, call me tomorrow.”

58. There just happened to be a lawyer convention and a plumber convention in Oregon at the same time. There was a party of three plumbers and three lawyers leaving California and taking the train to the conventions. As they were standing in line for tickets, the lawyers noticed that the plumbers only bought one ticket. The lawyers bought their three tickets and boarded the train but watched the plumbers to see how they were going to get by with only one ticket.
After boarding, the three plumbers squeezed into a restroom. Finally the porter came by and knocked on the door as he said, “Ticket please”. The door cracked open and an arm reached out and gave the porter the ticket.

After the conventions, the lawyers decided to do the same thing so they only purchased one ticket. However they noticed the plumbers didn’t purchase any tickets at all. They weren’t too concerned though because -hey- they were saving some bucks right? Well, they all boarded the train and the lawyers packed into a tiny restroom. After a few minutes, one of the plumbers came by and knocked on the door saying, “Ticket please.”

63. “Had I been more responsible I might have made something of myself as a junk bond trader, long-haul trucker or perhaps a plumbing contractor.” – Brock Yates

65. “A plumber is an adventurer who traces leaky pipes to their source.” – Arthur Baer

66. “Every actor is somewhat mad, or else he’d be a plumber or a bookkeeper or a salesman.” – Bela Lugosi

67. “Modern cynics and skeptics… see no harm in paying those to whom they entrust the minds of their children a smaller wage than is paid to those to whom they entrust the care of their plumbing.” – John F. Kennedy

68. “The process of competitively selecting contractors to perform work is based on a system of rewards and penalties, all distributed randomly.”
– Norman R. Augustine

69. A plumber in San Diego arrived at his next job only to find his client was going out. Worried about the clients Rotweiler the man asks if he could come back later.
Noticing the plumber’s insecurity the client says, “Don’t worry about the dog he won’t hurt you, but whatever you do don’t talk to the parrot!”. Heeding the client’s warning he walks into the house and into the kitchen.

Feeling more confident about the Rotweiler he starts working on the sink. Barely after starting he notices the parrot sitting by the Rotweiler, all of a sudden the parrot bursts out with a bunch of insult’s. Almost half way through the job the plumber starts to get angry, he starts to tell the bird to shut up.All of a sudden the bird becomes silent, then very quietly the bird says, “Sick him Rex.”

70.A professor of mathematics noticed that his kitchen sink at his home leaked. He called a plumber. The plumber came the next day and sealed a few screws, and everything was working as before.

The professor was delighted. However, when the plumber gave him the bill a minute later, he was shocked. “This is one-third of my monthly salary!” he yelled.
Well, all the same he paid it and then the plumber said to him, “I understand your position as a professor. Why don’t you come to our company and apply for a plumber position?
You will earn three times as much as a professor. But remember, when you apply, tell them that you completed only seven elementary classes. They don’t like educated people.”
So it happened. The professor got a job as a plumber and his life significantly improved. He just had to seal a screw or two occasionally, and his salary went up significantly.
One day, the board of the plumbing company decided that every plumber had to go to evening classes to complete the eighth grade. So, our professor had to go there too. It just
happened that the first class was math. The evening teacher, to check students’ knowledge, asked for a formula for the area of a circle. The person asked was the professor. He jumped to the board, and then he realized that he had forgotten the formula. He started to reason it, and he filled the white board with integrals, differentials, and other advanced formulas to conclude the result he forgot. As a result, he got “minus pi times r square.”

He didn’t like the minus, so he started all over again. He got the minus again. No matter how many times he tried, he always got a minus. He was frustrated. He gave the class a
frightened look and saw all the plumbers whisper: “Switch the limits of the integral!!”

71. A little old lady had some trouble with her pipes, so she called the plumber and asked him to come and fix them, which he promised to do first thing the following morning. Being a little forgetful, she forgot he was coming the following morning and went out to do her shopping and then play bridge with her cronies.

When the plumber turned up and knocked on her door, her parrot squawked, “Who’s there?” And the plumber answered: “It’s the plumber, come to mend the pipes.” When no one answered the door after a few minutes, the plumber knocked again, and the parrot squawked, “Who’s there?” And the plumber answered: “It’s the plumber, come to mend the pipes.” Still no one answered and so, after a few more minutes, the plumber knocked again, and the parrot squawked, “Who’s there?” And, once again, the plumber answered: “It’s the plumber, come to mend the pipes.”
By mid-morning he was crying with frustration and by lunchtime the poor fella had died of exhaustion. That evening, the little old lady returned home and stumbled over someone as she tried to unlatch her door in the dark. “Who’s there?” she said. And the parrot answered: “It’s the plumber, come to mend the pipes.”

72.A doctor has some trouble with the kitchen sink, on a public holiday. He calls the local plumber, only to be told that it’s his day off.
“But I get called out on my days off, too!” says the doctor, somewhat exasperated. So, the plumber relents.
The plumber arrives, and glances over the sink, looking preoccupied. He mumbles something about golf, then hands the doctor a couple of aspirin and walks out, saying, “Put these in. If it doesn’t clear up in 24 hours, call me tomorrow.”

73. On coming home from a late night at the office, the partner at a presigious law firm discovered that his basement was flooded. He summoned a plumber. The plumber arrived soon afterward, with a spare set of overalls and a cap that said “Blue Collar Guy”.The lawyer, still dressed in his expensive suit, silk tie, and gleaming wingtips, chuckled. “I like your hat,” he said. “But you’re the first plumber I’ve met who brought a change of clothes to a job.” The plumber smiled.
The plumber went down into the basement, and the lawyer heard him working downstairs. Before too long, the plumber came back upstairs. “I’m almost done down there. I’m going to write up your bill, then I’m going to go out to my truck for a tool I need to finish up.”

The plumber added, “The overalls and hat you asked me about, they’re not for me. I’m looking for a new assistant, and I was hoping you might know somebody who wanted the job.” The lawyer responded, with more than a hint of condescension, “I’m a lawyer. Who would I know who would want to work as a plumber?” The plumber shrugged, and handed the lawyer his bill.
A couple of minutes later, when the plumber returned from his truck, found the lawyer, dressed in the hat and overalls. “I had a chance to look over your bill while you were out,” the lawyer said. “You found yourself an assistant.”

74. An urgent call was put in for a plumber at noon but he didn’t arrive until 5 hours later. “How is it?” he asked entering the house. “Not so bad,” replied the home owner. “While we were waiting for you to arrive I taught my wife how to swim.”

75. A plumber attended to a leaking faucet at the neurosurgeon’s house. After a two-minute job the plumber demanded $150.
The neurosurgeon exclaimed, ‘I don’t charge this amount even though I am a surgeon.”
The plumber replied, “I agree, you are right. I too, didn’t either, when I was a surgeon. That’s why I switched to plumbing!”

76. The plumber finished with his girl this weekend, he said: “It’s over Flo.”

77. The collective noun for plumbers – a flood of plumbers.

78. A plumber hobbles down the road in a cast and meets a friend.
“How did you break your leg?” asked the friend
“It’s like this,” he replied:
“This guy had promised his wife that he would fix the sink plumbing on a particular day. That day, he realised he would need to stay late at
work, so he called me. I stopped by the man’s office for the house key, and went to work.
“When the wife got home, she saw my bottom half protruding from the sink cabinet. She assumed it was her husband, and proceeded to
remove my trousers and give me some, … intimate attention.
“Then the phone rang, and the woman left to answer it.
When she returned, she angrily said, “That was my husband on the phone…who are YOU?”
“I was startled, so when I got up to reply, I bumped my head and was
knocked out. The woman pulled me out, and must have fastened my trousers and called an ambulance.
“When the medics were carrying me out, they asked what had taken place – When I told them, they laughed so hard that they dropped me.
That’s when I broke my leg!”

79. Two plumbers, Bob and Phil, went bar-hopping every week together, and every week like clockwork, Bob would go home with a woman while Phil went home alone.
One week Phil had had enough and asked Bob for his secret to picking up women. “That’s easy,” said Bob. “When you’re out on the dance floor and she leans in and asks you what you do for a living, don’t tell her you’re a plumber. Tell her you’re a lawyer.”
Later Phil is dancing with a woman when she leans in and asks him what he does for a living. “I’m a lawyer,” says Phil. The woman smiles and asks, “Want to go to my place? It’s right around the corner.” They go to her place and fifteen minutes later Phil’s back in the bar telling Bob about his success.
“I’ve only been a lawyer fifteen minutes,” Phil snickers, “And I’ve already screwed someone!”

80. A woman calls in a plumber when her washing machine breaks down. The plumber arrives, studies the machine, then produces a hammer and gives it a hefty whack.
The washing machine starts working again and the plumber presents a bill for $200.
‘Two hundred dollars?’ says the woman. ‘All you did was hit it with the hammer.’
So the plumber gives her an itemised bill: ‘Hitting washing machine with a hammer – $5. Knowing where to hit it – $195.’

81. A plumber on a booty call says, “Are you prepared to get wet, because these pipes are about to burst.”

82. I had a nightmare where I couldn’t wipe my ass. It was the sh*ttiest dream ever. On a scale of one to ten urinate.

83. Confucius says, “Man who dig for watch in toilet, bound to have sh*tty timing”.

84. Knock Knock!
Who’s there?
Urine.
Urine Who?
URINEsecure don’t know what for.
One guy is in love with a girl
He goes to the girl’s father and says “I want to marry your daughter.”
The father says “With the money you have you can’t even pay for my daughter’s toilet paper.”
The guy say’s, “Don’t worry, i’m not going to marry a girl who is full of crap.”

85. A drunk gets up from the bar and heads for the bathroom. A few minutes later, a loud, blood curdling scream is heard from the bathroom. A few minutes after that, another loud scream reverberates through the bar. The bartender goes into the bathroom to investigate, why the drunk is screaming.
“What is all the screaming about in there? You’re scaring the customers!”
“I’m just sitting here on the head and every time I try to flush, something comes up and squeezes my balls.” So, the bartender opens the door, looks in and says… “You idiot!”
“You’re sitting on the mop bucket!”

86. Boy: May I please, go to the bathroom?
Teacher: Only if you can say the alphabet
Boy: OK abcdefghijklmnoqrstuvwxyz
Teacher: Where’s the p?
Boy: “Half way down my leg.”

87. Boy: Excuse me, but I need help going pee.
Teacher: What kind of help do you need from me?
Boy: Well every time I try to do it, I am too short and I get it all over me.
Teacher: I still don’t see how I can help with that? But let’s go see what options we can think of.
So they both enter the bathroom and close the door, so the other kids can’t make fun of the boy. Which is when he motions to whisper something in his teacher’s ear. She leans down and he says quietly to her this suggestion.
Boy: I think I might be able to reach the bowl if you held my dinky for me.
Teacher: Well only this one time, but I doubt it will do any good.
The boy unzips his pants, pulls down his underwear, steps closer to the bowl, then looks up at his teacher. She reaches around with both hands, taking his tiny grade school wee wee in them firmly. And in seconds his one incher grew red hot and several inches longer. This caused it to bounce firmly up down and side to side, then gusher a yellow stream through the air and fountain like into the toilet bowl. Afterwards the boy thanks her for the hands on help.
Boy: My daddy is a plumber and always says if a pipe isn’t working right, get a second pair of hands to find what’s wrong quicker. Maybe I can return the favor when I get my own set of tools, and return the favor one day.
Teacher: Thank you, but my plumbing is working fine and you need to pull your pants up before we open the door.
Boy: Oh gosh. Can you help me with the zipper?
She rolls her eyes.

88. A college freshman is attending his first campus party, but drinks too much and heads for the bathroom. It is dark in the bathroom, and the light switch doesn’t work, but he has to pee bad. So he unbuckles his jeans and waddles in the dark towards where he thinks a toilet should be. He feels around, finds the toilet is already lid up, so he aims in the dark, then begins to shoot a heavy stream of urine into the general direction of the open bowl. After a minute, he still is peeing strong, but trips on something moving around in front of him and blocking his aim. Suddenly the silent bathroom is filled with moaning and cursing from where he still was peeing strong. In the dark, he feels a hand grab his manhood and move it in either direction, but his pee muffles the sound of a voice trying to talk. Finally he is yanked downward and he fills something up until he is drained to the last drop.
Then a girl’s voice says, “Dude, I passed out on the toilet, but I didn’t expect to wake up without any warning to some dick peeing on my hair.”
“I’m so sorry,” I couldn’t see anything, “I swear, I wouldn’t do that on purpose. If you hadn’t found that empty cup, it would have been a lot worse.”
She is still holding his tool, as she asks, “What cup?”
“The one I peed into, while you aimed me at it. God I filled the whole thing,” he smiles down at her.
“Oh, no that wasn’t a cup. I drank it, since you were already peeing all over me.” She keeps stroking him, and now is massaging his testicles firmly, “Don’t worry. I am easy going, most girls won’t suck or swallow. But I drink anything that goes in my mouth, especially when I pass out like tonight.”
The college boy is surprised by this statement, “Really? You do that a lot?”
“Sure,” she says now beginning to go down on him, “Besides, like an hour ago, somebody came in claiming to be a plumber, so I said prove it. Next thing I know, he takes me from behind and goes wild with a plunger, until I blackout.”
“Oh my god,” the boy says.
“I know,” she replies, “By the way, any chance you know how to use one?”

89.This guy was on a plane and really had to pee. He goes to the back of the plane and there was a line for the men’s room. So, he asks a female to see if there was anyone in the ladies room. She says no, go ahead in there but don’t press any of the buttons. He says alright and enters the bathroom, relieved. He saw the buttons and decided to push them anyway thinking “What could go wrong?”
The first button was blue, upon pushing, it goes bbrrrrrr. That’s cold having cold water spray his ass.
The second button was red and goes “oh that feels really good. How come there aren’t any buttons like these in the men’s room?”
The last button pushed by him was a white button with the letters ATR stamped on it. He woke up hours later in a hospital.
He asked the nurse “Why am I in the hospital?”
She says, “Because you pushed the ATR button.”
She is laughing hysterically while she said it.
He said “What’s so funny? What does ATR mean?”
She replies, “Umm, ATR means automatic tampon remover.”

This one will be known to many plumbers, as it is famous within the industry. Again it is a multiple part joke that hides itself under the pun and games of being an actual plumbing advertisement, as you might see running in the newspaper classifieds in the old days, before the Internet and the Worldwide web.

And now a metaphysical and religious style joke a plumber told one day, about the plumbing in life, but not about a plumber that we know of…

100. A Catholic priest, a Wiccan witch, and a Navajo shaman were taking a piss together in a men’s bathroom side by side.
After finishing the Catholic priest goes to was his hands, saying, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.”
The Wiccan witch goes to the sink and recites these words, “Water is the element to purify that which is impure.”
Finally the Navajo shaman finishes and says to the other two men,” I spend many years in training as a shaman for my people, but even before that time had come, I had taught myself not to piss on my hands.”

And to end things off, how about a good old fashioned limerick about plumbing, or sort of…

101.

There was a young plumber from Lee,
who was plumbing his girl with great glee,
she said stop your plumbing,
I think someone’s coming,
said the plumber still plumbing “its me”!

A Short Conclusion:
Why a Royal Flush is Always Better Than a Full House…

If asked to choose between having a plumber or anything else be your neighbor, choose a plumber. They are certain to be there when you need them, in the world’s worst possible circumstances. Oh yes and two more for the road. First a last plumbers joke.

Did you hear the one about the plumber, the Rabbi and the Priest? No? Well, neither did I!

Learn The Dangers of DIY Plumbing

Pros and Cons Of Do-It-Yourself Plumbing

Plumbing is a system of tanks, pipes, fittings and other components necessary for the supply of water, sanitation as well as heating in a building. Most home owners in Australia have resorted to making simple plumbing repairs by their own without involving a professional in a DIY program (DIY Plumbing). This is preferred by most people since it saves on time and resources of looking for and hiring plumbing professionals. It also helps in avoiding disasters that may happen within your home.

Why DIY plumbing is done most often

Plumbers charge the cost of labor at an hourly rate. The actual cost of your project largely depends on the cost of materials, scope of the project and the labor cost. Considering all these costs, many people prefer minor DIY plumbing. Many savvy home owners opt for doing simple fixes and adjustments themselves in order to save money.

DIY methods gives home owners the confidence in fixing pumbing isssues in their homes even without the help of a professional plumber.

However, complex plumbing issues requires complex solutions that could not be handled by a novice. A profesional has the capability to spot superfluous issues like molds and polybutylene piping.

Dangers in DIY Plumbing

Some plumbing jobs are not easy to do on your own. There is a very high possibility that you will hurt yourself and create more problems that you started with. There are several problems that are associated with DIY plumbing. Many times the only option os to call a licensed plumber to save the day. The following are the dangers of repairing your own plumbing

Lack of knowledge

Fixing your own plumbing without the proper skills and experience can land you in hot water. So many things can go wrong that may endanger you and your family. Small jobs of replacing washers and fixing small leaks may be fine. But larger jobs are best left to the experts.

Worsening the situation

In the process of repairs, you may end up making the matters worse. However small a leak may appear, it can turn to be very disastrous if care is not taken. Failing to use the right tools to address the plumbing issue may worsen the situation.

Increasing the cost of repairs

If you add up the cost of your own materials and time then combine this with the plumbers bill, you could be paying an exorbitant price. A simple leak could end up costing hundreds of dollars.

How to find a good plumber

It can be difficult to find a good plumber. The industry has so many plumbers to choose from. But if you do your homework you should be able to find a reputable tradesman you can trust. First, check if they have a plumbing license and an insuarance cover. Secondly, read their online reviews and get some references to be sure of their services together with experience. You may also get referrals from those whom you trust (e.g. friend, colleague or relative).

Conclusion

It is good to know how to fix simple plumbing issues in your home but leave the complex ones to the pros. Don’t risk the safety of your fmaily and spend more than you need too. You might be surprised how cheap hiring a plumber actually is.

The Complete Plumbing Checklist For New Homebuyers

Buying a home is one of the biggest investments you’ll make. If you don’t do your research it can be a costly mistake. This infographic checklist covers the top 7 things to
inspect prior to purchasing a home.

1. Hot Water Systems

Check the age of all hot water systems. You can find the age and warranty information on the badge. As a general rule water units have a life span of 10 – 15 years.

2. Water Leaks

Check all taps, pipes and water systems for leaks, preferably hire a professional for a complete leak detection analysis. Water leaks will only get worse, make sure these are fixed prior to settlement.

3. Sewers & Pipes

Check the base of the pipes and taps to see if they are made from clay. Clay sewer systems can break so consider the cost of replacing them in the total cost of the home. Prepare to pay $5,000-$20,000.

4. Water Efficiency

Check showers, taps and toilets for water efficiency. This can save you money and help the environment. If the systems look like they are from a museum get the fixtures tested or ask for new models with water efficiency compliance.

5. Knock On Tiles

If more than 20% sound hollow, the waterproofing could be compromised. Without reliable waterproofing there could be issues with mould and damp. This could become a threat to the structure of the property.

6. Roofing & Guttering

Check the roof for loose or damaged gutters. Cracks and leaks can lead to damp areas in the ceiling and walls and potentially flood living areas of the house.

7. Plumbing Inspection

Book a comprehensive and detailed plumbing report by either a plumber or a building inspector. Ensure they have experience and use the latest technology to identify all plumbing problems.

TIP: Always book a pre-purchase inspection prior to buying a property and ensure the above areas are checked thoroughly.

Fun Facts

“Wasted Water”

A leaking tap that drips 10 times per minute, wastes three liters of water per day. That’s over eighty liters a month!

“The Crapper”

2. Way back in 1596, John Harrington invented the flushing toilet. This is where the nickname “the John.” Originated. His namesake, Thomas Crapper, who was a famous plumber is where the name “The Crapper” came from.

Your Plumber Brisbane Guide

Learn About Plumbing Services, Advantages and Prices

In this plumber Brisbane guide we will break down the plumber terms, services and prices. Plumbers are in high demand in both domestic and commercial industries throughout Brisbane in South East Queensland. If you are building a new home or renovating an existing one, chances are you’ll need a good plumber by your side to get the plumbing connections done correctly and within legal requirements. This plumber Brisbane guide will educate readers about the trade itself, the licensing and other important factors so you have a good understanding of the plumbing industry.

What Is A Plumber?

A plumber is a trained and licensed tradesman who can repair and install pipes, fittings and other equipment related to the supply of water, sanitation and heating.

Every property has fittings that require an experienced tradesman to fix them when they do not function as normal. Even the smallest properties have taps, pipes and drains that can only be repaired by a qualified plumber who has been trained to service them correctly. Plumbers are tradesman who specialize in understanding the workings of various equipment and products related to water and heat. They are well equipped to identify issues and fix them to ensure all such apparatus function smoothly. Knowing about the different kinds of plumbers, qualifications to look for, and knowing how to choose the right professional can go a long way in solving such issues without hassle.

Whenever there are any issues related to water supply such as leakages, broken pipes or blocked drains, it becomes essential to hire a plumber so the issue can be permanently fixed. Any carelessness in dealing with such improper fittings can lead to voiding warranties and other damage that can prove costly. Inexperienced (Do-It-Yourself) attempts at fixing problems by oneself can also cause injuries. Hiring the services of an experienced plumber Brisbane is advisable for health and safety and piece of mind.

Why does a plumber have to be licensed?

Repairing the issues with the water supplying system of the house is not an activity to be taken lightly. If not done right, it can pose serious health risks to the inmates of the house. Any mistake in repairing the water system of one house can also lead to water supply issues in all other connecting houses. Keeping the safety of people on priority, Queensland Government issues plumbing licenses to the adequately qualified and experienced plumbers. Hiring a licensed plumber ensures that the plumbing done complies with the Government regulations and minimises any risk to the health and safety of the house inmates.

Qualifications/Licenses required:

The Queensland Government’s Department of Housing and Public Works advises that all licenses must be obtained via the QBCC. Issuance of plumbing licenses and monitoring compliance with the plumbing regulations is governed by Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC). There are essentially three broad classes of plumber and drainage licenses.

Plumber

Drainer

Restricted

QBCC has further disintegrated the classes to individual licenses for different categories of plumbers. The licenses for occupational and provisional plumbing and drainage services are –

Plumber – occupational

Plumber – Provisional

Drainer – occupational

Drainer – Provisional

Plumber and drainer – occupational

Plumber, drainer and gasfitter – occupational

There are also restricted licenses for plumbing and draining that are issued with certain conditions. More details about the restricted, occupational and provisional plumbing licenses can be obtained from the QBCC website.

To qualify for a license from the QBCC, one must complete Certificate III in plumbing. This enables the applicant to be eligible for a provisional license where he can work under the supervision of a plumber. To be able to practice alone, an occupational plumber license is required. For this the applicant must have the qualifications of a provisional plumber along with 5 competencies from CPC40912 Certificate IV in plumbing and services. These certificates are offered by many educational institutions in Queensland such as TAFE.

To know whether a plumber is genuinely licensed or does not hold a license that has expired or is invalid, the license number of the plumber can be checked on the QBCC website.

Categories & Services

There are different categories of plumbers who specialize in different functionalities of plumbing. Some of these include the following.

Residential plumber

Commercial plumber

Emergency plumber

Toilet plumber

Hot water plumber

Residential Plumbing

Anyone who owns a home has probably hired domestic plumbers. These tradesman are qualified and understand the water system, irrigation and various fittings in residential houses when they are under construction. As well as being able to repair and fix any problems in existing homes. Since residential plumbers are well versed with general house layout, they have a good understanding of where to expect the water pipelines are based and how to access them safely.

Apart from knowledge and training, any good residential plumbing contractors also carries a range of necessary equipment to enable them to locate, identify and solve issues promptly. They can easily reach problem areas and cause minimal disturbance or damage to the home. A residential plumber can be called if there is for leaking taps, water seeping into walls, toilet flush problems, blocked drains and also various heating related problems. So whenever there is a need to repair water, sanitation or heating problems, call your local tradesman for immediate assistance.

Commercial Plumbing

An experienced commercial plumber will be trained to work on large water supply systems. These include facilities such as schools, offices, hospitals and other public places. Commercial plumbers are involved in laying the pipelines and creating the water system for public buildings and real estate development when they are under construction. Most tradesman who specialise as a commercial or industrial plumbers are extremely knowledgeable in the layout and the operations of a large irrigation systems.

Unlike residential plumbers who mostly operate alone, commercial tradesman generally operate in teams due to the bigger size of the water system that needs to be fixed. The equipment is substantially more advanced, capable of dismantling, repairing and re-installation of different parts of piping and drainage. Commercial plumbing contractors are generally contacted for regular maintenance work of buildings, clearing up blockages in long pipelines and fixing any leaks or broken valves.

Emergency Plumber

Some issues require an emergency plumbing if they pose a health hazard or impair the normal operation of pipes and drains. A broken tap that is spraying water could be an example of this. Such a tap can even lead to emptying of the water storage tanks which can lead to bigger water crisis. Not every plumber will work on a 24 hour schedule. Emergency plumbers can work after-work hours to assist in such emergencies. A plumber who handles emergencies a just a phone call away and can normally be at a designated location within 1-2 hours. They can provide a temporary solution so that the problem can be permanently fixed later on. In many cases they will solve the issue during their visit, depending on the severity of the issue. For residents of public housing or tenants renting from an agent there are certain guidelines that relate to emergency situations and after hours assistance which can be found at the property maintenance section of the Government website.

Apart from their equipment, a reputable emergency plumbers will also keep spare parts and products that can be used to fix plumbing issues. Since stores might not be open during such times, the spare part back up is of great value.

Toilet Plumbing

Leaking and broken toilets are also categorized under plumbing requirements. But the knowledge and skills required to fix a toilet is very different from the knowledge and skills possessed by a general plumber. Sometimes blocked toilets require high pressure water jets to remove the blockage. But maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in the process is crucial. Toilet plumbers have a good understanding of the working mechanism of the cistern, flushes and toilets and can repair issues without damaging the toilet.

Thi sservice includes leakages in the toilet pipes, flushes not working or running toilets that won’t stop. A specialist can repair such issues within the same day. If required they can also replace and install a new the toilet or other parts to ensure that your toilet is back to normal working condition.

Hot Water Plumbing

Tradesman who install and repair hot water heater and pipelines are referred to as a hot water plumber. They assess the dimensions of the house and advise on the right size of heating equipment required for the household. They will also make recommendations regarding the most suitable kind of heating system for the premises – electric, gas or solar. Based on the capacity of hot water system and the source of energy utilised, they can provide an estimate on running costs. It is popular nowadays to install solar systems due to their energy efficiency.

Hot water plumbers provide advice on energy efficiency methods to get the best hot water system installed. Along with installation, they can also be approached for regular maintenance and repairs to the unit. If there are issues with water not getting heated, leaking pipes etc. they can be fixed by either replacing elements or repairing smaller common faults.

Difference between a gas fitter and plumber

A gasfitter should not be confused with a plumber. Plumbers are different from gasfitters in the following ways –

A plumber is licensed for both plumbing and gas fitting but a gasfitter is not licensed for plumbing.

Gas fitters are not necessarily licensed while a plumber is required to hold licenses.

While plumbers can work on various issues, gas fitters work majorly on fixing stoves, cooktops, BBQ etc.

How Can A Plumber Help Me?

Plumbers help in laying of the pipes and other apparatus of the water system of a building and install most of the fittings such as taps, geysers, toilets, wash basins, kitchen sinks and showers. They also install the drainage systems in a way that keeps the building hygienic. For residential of South East Queensland having qualified plumbers Brisbane can save time and money.

Common issues:

Water leaks in taps

Blocked drains

Toilet flushing issues

New installations

What causes water leaks in taps?

Some of the common causes of water leaks in taps are as follows.

When the valve that controls the flow of water in a tap gets corroded, it does not hold its position well which can lead to tap leaks

The handle of the tap is tightened using a screw system. This screw system has a ring called O’ ring. If the O ring wears out due to usage, it can lead to loosening up of the screw causing leakages.

The washer present in tap rubs against the valve seat and can wear out easily leading to leaking.

What causes blocked drains?

Drains commonly get blocked when debris or any other objects get stuck in them. Some of the common objects that cause blockage in drains are –

Hair

Grease or oil

Toiletries

Debris

Plant roots

Other foreign objects like coins, jewellery, stones etc.

Some of the other reasons for which plumbers are called are as follows:

Water Backflow

Water hammer

Soakwell

Pipe relining

What is Water Backflow?

When the flow of water in a pipe is reversed in the undesirable direction, it is called water backflow. Water backflow can be very harmful especially because it can contaminate the clean drinking water supply of the building. Water backflow happens when there is a change in the pressure of the pipeline. Plumbers have backflow corrective and prevention devises that ensure the supply of water in the right direction is restored.

What is Water hammer?

Water hammer or hydraulic shock occurs when a tap is closed suddenly leading to a pressure wave being created in the pipeline. This leads to a noise in the pipeline. There are air chambers in the system that ensure that water hammering does not happen. But with time, the water absorbs this air. Water can be drained out the water from the pipeline and ensure the air cushion is recreated to stop water hammer noise.

What is Soakwell?

Water from excessive rains and storms can lead to erosions and dampness. Underground water pipes that let the water from storms flow to a collection unit referred to as soakwell. A soakwell gathers the water from rains and storms and disperses it to the underground in a manner that avoids any dampness or any water puddles getting created.

What is Pipe relining?

When there are any damages in a water pipeline, the conventional method used is to dig the pipe out and replace it with a new pipe. This procedure is followed even when a pipeline gets old and needs to be replaced. Pipe relining is a new method where old and damaged pipes do not have to be dug out and replaced. The existing pipes are relined with epoxy that makes a strong and long lasting frame within the existing pipeline. Plumbers are knowledgeable and trained in the process and are hired for this kind of work.

Why Does A Plumber Need A License

In this article we will explore the importance of having a plumber license. Specifically the reason why plumbers need to be licensed in Queensland. You will learn why it is important to work with the correct licensing and how it benefits both the businesses and customers.

What Kind of Work Requires a Plumbing License?

According to the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC), there are some kinds of plumbing work that don’t require the plumber license. This following list highlights what work can be done without a the help of a fully licensed plumber. It is also important to note that although many jobs require a licence, many jobs can be performed without a licensed is under $3300.

Simple jobs such as replacing jumper valves and washers in taps and changing shower heads do not require professional plumbers. Additionally, replacing drop or float valve washers, suction cup rubbers in water closet (WC) cisterns can also be done without a plumber. Various other jobs including cleaning and maintenance on ground grates to sanitary drains and replacing ground level caps on sanitary drains. The maintenance of an irrigation systems and watering systems, such as irrigation and lawn watering, from a valve, tap or back flow prevention device can also be performed without supervision of assistance from a plumber, but if you are unsure it is best to seek professional advice from a local plumber.

All other work will require a plumber that has a license. This includes anyone overseeing plumbing and draining work, ensuring it is free of defects and complies with the plans. There are different kinds of licensing for different kinds of work. With the QBCC, you should be able to find out which license you need for which kind of work. You can discover this either using the QBCC’s database or the photo ID card given to all licensed holders. The kind of work you need a license to perform includes:

Making repairs or maintenance to any plumbing systems

Installing and repairing drains

Installing and repairing hot water systems

Gutter Piping

Property renovations

Emergency plumbing

Licenses and the Law

It is illegal to either work as, or make use of, an unlicensed plumber. The Plumbing Code of Australia (PCA) is the legal and technical document for all plumbing work and part of the National Construction Code (NCC). All workers in the design and construction of buildings must follow the NCC. In the PCA, it states the minimum requirements needed for plumbing work, including:

Sanitary plumbing

Draining & storm water drainage systems

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems

Waste water systems

By law, all licensed plumbers are required to follow the PCA, whilst an unlicensed plumber are unable to legally ignore many of these standards.

In Queensland, it is QBCC that issues licenses. It also keeps a database of all licensed plumbers and what they can and cannot do. A contractor operating from outside Queensland can have their licenses recognised within the state, too. The Queensland Government also releases some important information on the Queensland Plumbing and Waste Water Code Guidelines which can be found here.

Why Should I Hire Qualified Plumbers?

As a plumbing customer, you know how important plumbing is to the house. The water you drink, wash in and use as waste is all controlled by your house’s plumbing. Your health and safety, as well as that of your family, depends on it.

Most of us know hiring plumbers can be expensive. Yet it is even more expensive when something goes wrong, especially if it was due to a an unlicensed do-it-yourself job. Then you’re looking at repairs, damages and potential legal costs. Below is a comprehensive list of reasons why you should always use licensed plumbers.

You will see the benefits that using licensed laborers bring as well as the risks of making use of illegal, unlicensed laborers.

Using an unlicensed plumber is against the law.

Licensed plumbers are hosted on a database. You can check the details of any license holding plumbers by visiting the QBCC website.

Using a qualified tradesman can potentially save a lot of money and hassle. If the work done is unsatisfactory or defective, a complaint can be lodged with the QBCC. In most cases you can just contact the company directly to solve the problem.

Make sure your worker is qualified. The simplest and most practical way to do this is to use a licensed plumber and drainer. This minimizes risks to your family’s health and safety

Defective or non-compliant work can often cost a lot more to fix than the work originally cost. You’re unlikely to get these costs back from an illegally working plumber.

With an unlicensed tradesman, you can never be sure whether the work is defective and can result in damage to your home.

Unlicensed plumbers won’t have any sort of insurance in the events of damage caused to your property.

Without a license, these tradesman do not have to report to the QBCC, and it is possible they may conduct in fraudulent behavior.

When Would I Need a Plumber License?

If you are a contractor doing work over $3300 and includes any of the services listed above it is best to get your full credentials in order.

Below, we take a look at the major reasons they need a license, for legal and business reasons.

Doing certain plumbing or drainage work without a license is against the law and can result in criminal prosecution. Check with our local council or the local building authority to check which work you can do.

Professional qualifications and licences are a sign of trust that the client can be assured their contractor is suitable and qualified for the task.

Any and all disputes with customers can be sorted through QBCC and their Dispute Resolution Process.

You will receive a photo ID card with details of your license validity and what you are licensed to do.

Final Verdict

If you only need a small repair job done, often you can do it yourself or call your local handyman. For other larger installations or repairs on pipework or leaks it is always best to call a local qualified contractor in your area. Using a fully experienced plumber with a license always puts customers as ease. This also ensures the health and safety of property owners isn’t at risk.

Remember next time you need a plumber, check to see if your work actually requires a fully licensed contractor. If it does, then always ask for your credentials.

Pricing depends on a variety of factors, which include:

Where you live

The type of service you require

The time take

The workforce required

The materials and equipment used

The qualifications & skill level

Many things are taken into consideration including materials, travel time and hours spent. However, you can calculate an estimate based on the average costs in the industry or by asking for quotes from different companies.

Costs can include:

The call out fee

The hourly rate

Products and materials costs

Additional costs

Call out fee – Price Range $50 – $100

The call out fee is charged to cover travel costs. It is the minimum fee that the plumber expects you to pay, and it usually covers their time, travel costs and consultation. The call out fee varies from one company to the other, but it is within the range of $50 – $100. The call out fee is often absorbed into the job price if you choose to hire them.

Hourly rate – Price Range $50-$120

The hourly rate is calculated from the time they start work. Just like with the call out fee, this rate varies from one supplier to the other. It is usually within the range of $50-$120. The size of the project is also likely to affect the hourly rate, with some companies offering discounts for larger projects.

Product and material costs

These are the cost of the materials used when during repairs or maintenance. This includes the price of pipes, faucets, and any other accessories required. The costs might also include any expenses incurred during their purchase and delivery.

Additional charges

These include digging, moving, or scaffolding is required.

Choosing the right plumber is an important decision, which you should never take lightly. In Brisbane alone, there are about 10,000 listed plumbing service providers.

Make sure they are licensed

You should ask them to provide you with licensing information. This will help to ensure that you only hire a person with the necessary qualifications.

Ask for insurance cover

Every contractor should have public liability insurance. This will help protect you from any injury or damage.

Consider the experience

Experience is very important. The more experienced tradesman can utilise their knowledge from previous jobs.

Ask for warranty/guarantees

As for guarantees on workmanship. Also check for product warranties.

Final Verdict

Always get a few quotes before hiring a plumber. This gives you the advantage of comparing prices and making the right choice.
